The most basic types of wood surface finishes are made up of oil-based varnishes, lacquers, oils, shellac, and water based finishes. The purpose of wood finishes are to protect the surface from moisture and make the wood appear richer and deeper in color. The difference from plastic and metal finishes is that wood finishes aim to improve the appearance of the surface instead of trying to hide it with a finish like paint.
Let’s take for example a polyurethane finish. Polyurethane comes in water and oil based forms. It is a solid, durable finish to wood, but it dries slowly.
